Statistics is deeply connected to various scientific disciplines, with its most challenging problems often stemming from scientific inquiries. Innovative statistical research frequently emerges from the demands of diverse applications. This volume highlights the essential role of statistics in fields such as genetics and environmental sciences. It features articles on topics ranging from human and agricultural genetic DNA research to carcinogens, chemical concentrations in the environment, and space debris alongside atmospheric chemistry. Additionally, it includes discussions on statistical methods that are versatile enough for various practical situations. The papers have been peer-reviewed by experts and the volume's editors. The contributions stem from presentations at the Workshop on Statistics and the Sciences, held at the Centro Stefano Franscini in Ascona, Switzerland, from May 23 to 28, 1999. This event was co-organized by the Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology in Lausanne and Zurich, with support from the Minerva Research Foundation.
