Since the opening of Soviet archives in the late 1980s it has become possible to examine the vast quantity of material from the 1939 census with once top-secret data from the Central Bureau of Statistics. This wealth of data allowed the author to undertake a broad analysis of the principal demographic and social processes at work among Soviet Jews during the 1930s, on the one hand, and their implication for the Holocaust, on the other.
