This volume showcases significant contributions to regional and urban economics by Noboru Sakashita, a leading scholar in the field. After graduating from the University of Tokyo, he taught and advanced research at several universities, including Hokkaido, Tohoku, Osaka, and Tsukuba. Sakashita's journey as a regional and urban economist began in 1965 when he attended the University of Pennsylvania's Regional Science Department as a Fulbright scholar. Immersed in a stimulating environment alongside Walter Isard, the founder of Regional Science, and his passionate colleagues, he focused on regional science research. The first two papers in this collection were produced during his time at Pennsylvania. Upon returning to Japan, Sakashita continued his research while nurturing emerging talent in regional and urban economics. He is a globally recognized scholar, known for his influential presentations at major conferences and numerous publications in esteemed journals. Notably, he served as president of the Regional Science Association International in 1987-88 and was the inaugural president of the Applied Regional Science Conference from 1987 to 1989.
