En savoir plus sur le livre
The anonymous Armenian “Geography,” attributed to Ananias of Shirak, is a crucial work from Armenian antiquity, serving as a primary source for the historical geography of Armenia and a vital research tool for the history, geography, and literature of Caucasia and the Persian Empire, particularly before the Islamic period. Drawing on Greek sources and local insights, it is also beneficial for classical studies and complements Ptolemy’s “Geography,” which it significantly influences. The text's main source appears to be the 4th-century mathematician Pappus of Alexandria, whose geographical work has not survived, making this compilation particularly valuable. The “Geography” exists in two versions, long and short. This publication marks the first English translation of both, presented on facing pages for comparison. The translation of the short version consulted fifteen of the oldest manuscripts, while the long version was based on a unique Venetian manuscript not examined in over a century. Accompanied by a detailed introduction, ten appendices, and nearly 1,600 notes, this work reveals extensive scholarship previously available only in Armenian and Russian. It also includes 26 maps, a comprehensive bibliography, and an index.
