Over the past 15 years Tacita Dean has created a body of work in film, photography and drawing that's impressive in its idiosyncratic handling of those media and striking in its contrary beauty. In combination with the drawings collected here, and with photographs and stories, her slow-moving projections--which border on the meditative--present a panorama in which fleeting moments come to a standstill. Her meticulous framing and awareness of the flow of filmic time evoke eerily specific atmospheres, and her films provide the creative impulse for remarkable work in other media. Analogue, the first methodical study and graphic presentation of her drawings, gathers not just those on paper but also on blackboards and alabaster and in photographs, and considers them in light of her roots as a painter. Dean discusses them, and their connections to her film work, in an interview.

Everyone wants to find their own place in the world. But where is it and what is it? How do we recognize place as being significant and not just merely space? And what is it that makes one place special and another not?

Documenting Tacita Dean's new film work on the many resonances of Sophocles' drama Tacita Dean's (born 1965) Antigone(2018) is an hour-long 35mm anamorphic film, and is the most complex work to date by the British-European artist. The name of this work combines the artist's personal history with the mythological world order: Antigone is the heroine in the eponymous drama by the Greek poet Sophocles, and is also the name of Tacita Dean's older sister. The name creates a double bond full of ambivalences and is the reason for Dean's exploration of the character. The leitmotif of the work is blindness: Antigonerevolves around fundamental questions of foresight and destiny, seeing and not seeing, and metaphorical blindness as a necessity for artistic work. It is also a thoroughly analogue work: Dean assembled the film images, which appear like collages, with and inside the camera using sophisticated stencils and multiple exposures. The result of this experimental project is both a pioneering achievement and a masterpiece. The book documents the narrative of the making and impact of this work.

Ende 2001 entstand Tacita Dean’s Videofilm „Green Ray on Madagaskar“. Der „Green Ray“, der grüne Strahl, ist ein optisches Phänomen, das sich mit dem letzten Moment des Sonnenuntergangs ereignet. Es ist selten vom Land her zu beobachten, und normalerweise nur dann, wenn die Sonne über einem hundertprozentig klaren Meereshorizont untergeht. Im Daumenkino ist der gesamte Sonnenuntergang - vom ersten bis zum letzten Moment – dokumentiert und nur eine einzige Seite enthält den grünen Strahl. Zum Buch erscheint eine Spezialausgabe von 100 numerierten und signierten Exemplaren.
