Medieval tax returns have long been recognised as a major source for linguists (especially dialectologists, lexicographers and onomasticians) as well as family, local and economic historians. Both linguists and historians have done their research for the most part independently from each other, with both groups exploring the same tax returns. The present volume provides various data from the poll tax returns for 1379 prepared for the particular demands of linguists and historians doing qualitative and quantitative research into the language, the social and economic life of late fourteenth century England.

The first substantial publication on cognitive onomastics was published as late as 1990. As progress has been slow ever since, cognitive onomastics is still an emerging discipline today. In the past quarter century the cognitive-onomastics enterprise has, however, provided insights into the nature of proper names (hereafter “names”) that deserve consideration from linguists of all schools of thought. An international team of cognitive onomasticians present principal methods and findings of cognitive onomastics in the present reader. It includes papers on the relationship between onomastics and cognitive science, on the nature of names (general aspects, identity), on the grammatical description of names, semantics of names (general aspects, metaphor, culture-specificness), and on names in literature (general aspects, names in translation). As names are regarded as the touchstone of linguistic theories, this book will prove indispensable to all scholars interested in language.

Der Band richtet sich an Namenforscher, Sprachtheoretiker und Sprachphilosophen und bietet eine umfassende Analyse der Namenidentität. Dieses bisher schwer fassbare Phänomen führte oft zu Missverständnissen und der Annahme einer Unvereinbarkeit von Theorie und Praxis. Mit dem neuen Bewusstsein für Namenidentität(en) lassen sich viele alte methodische und theoretische Probleme überwinden. Die Nomematik wird als Identitätstheorie der Namenforschung entwickelt und basiert auf einem dynamischen Sprachmodell (DSM), das sowohl diachron als auch synchron anwendbar ist. Zudem ist die Nomematik neurologisch und psychologisch fundiert. Wichtige Fragen betreffen die Abgrenzung der Namenidentität von etymologischer, formaler und funktionaler Identität sowie Namengleichheit. Identitätskriterium und Identifikationsschema sind zentrale Elemente der Identitätstheorie. Darüber hinaus wird die Kapazität der Nomematik als Systemtheorie und Metasprache thematisiert. Ihre Kompatibilität und analytische Fähigkeit gegenüber anderen Theorien machen die Nomematik auch zur Metatheorie. Die theoretischen Konzepte werden durch zahlreiche Beispiele und Abbildungen veranschaulicht.

Die vier so unterschiedlichen in diesem Sammelband zusammengestellten Beiträge eint ihr Generalthema, die Geschichte der Personennamenforschung. Die ersten drei Artikel gelten der englischen Anthroponomastik, während sich die vierte Arbeit der chinesischen Personennamenforschung widmet.
