Grundlage der Studie bilden 156 qualitative Interviews, die 1996 in fünf Krankenhäusern Ostösterreichs durchgeführt wurden. Befragt wurden Ärzte, Pflegekräfte, Therapeuten, Schüler und Oberinnen in sechs Abteilungen (Chirurgie, Gynäkologie, Interne, Kinder, Intensiv, Psychiatrie). Ziel der Studie war die Erfassung möglicher Haltungen zu ethischen Fragen und des konkreten Umgangs mit ethischen Problemen. Themen waren z. B. Patientenorientierung, ethische Grundhaltungen, Entscheidungs- und Kommunikationsprozesse, Ordnungsabläufe sowie rechtliche und ökonomische Rahmenbedingungen. Aus den Antworten wurden Ansätze eines ethisch-moralischen Vorverständnisses herausgearbeitet, daraus entstehende Konflikte in der täglichen Arbeit identifiziert und Möglichkeiten gesichtet, ethische Fragen künftig in den Krankenhausalltag einzubringen.
