V slovenčine vychádza preložené z latinčiny ako kompletné dielo po prvý raz. Forma je podobne ako u Thomasa Mora (Utópia, 1516) založená na rozhovore, tu medzi admirálom z Janova a Veľmajstrom rádu hospitalitov. Autor opisuje formu vlády založenú na asketizme, zdravom životnom štýle a astrológii. Dielo má svoje pokrokové pasáže (spoločenské vlastníctvo, právo a povinnosť práce, neexistencia vykorisťovania, spoločná práca, prístupná zdravotná starostlivosť a kreatívne vzdelávanie), ale aj kontroverzné časti (zrušenie monogamnej rodiny, podmienenosť života astrológiou, vojenské rovnostárstvo a prísna reglementácia). Campanella v diele zdôraznil dôležitosť poznania prírody a kozmických súvislostí pre pochopenie skutočnej podstaty javov a vecí. V súčasnosti sa Campanella považuje za predchodcu exegetiky reformovaného katolicizmu 20. storočia. Dosiaľ ho mnohí zaraďujú medzi najväčších synov Talianska, akými boli napr. G. Bruno, G.
