Globalization and doctoral education in the twenty-first century. This book provides an evaluation of changes and reforms in doctoral education since 2000. Recent decades have seen an explosion in doctoral education worldwide, and the increased potential for diverse employment has generated greater interest. Recognizing the diversity of academic cultures and institutional systems worldwide, the book advocates for a core value system to overcome inequalities in access to doctoral education. The chapters focus on the structures and quality assurance models of doctoral education, supervision, and funding from an institutional and comparative perspective. The book examines capacity building in the era of globalization, global labor market developments for doctoral graduates, and the ethical challenges and political contestations that may manifest in the process of pursuing a PhD.

Dem Physik-Nobelpreisträger Max Planck folgten 1937 der IG-Farben-Manager und Chemie-Nobelpreisträger Carl Bosch und 1941 der Ruhrindustrielle Albert Vögler als Präsidenten der Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gesellschaft (KWG). Die differenzierte Darstellung ihres wissenschaftspolitischen Wirkens sowie ihrer widersprüchlichen Haltung zum NS-Staat zeigt auf, wie sie sich – in unterschiedlichem Maße – für die Unabhängigkeit der KWG vor staatlicher Einflußnahme einsetzten, die Indienstnahme der Kaiser-Wilhelm-Institute für die Ziele des NS-Systems aber nicht verhinderten. Weiterhin wird die Rolle der Generalverwaltung und des Senats sowie die vielfältigen personellen und institutionellen Verbindungen zwischen diesen Führungsgremien der KWG und den Entscheidungsträgern der NS-Wissenschaftspolitik untersucht. Eine ausführliche Analyse der Quellenlage gibt Hinweise über den Verbleib der archivalischen Überlieferung und die Möglichkeit ihrer Rekonstruktion.
