This is the fullest commentary on Theocritus’ hymn to the Dioscuri (Idyll 22) ever produced. The introduction considers the structure and unity of the poem; its chronological and literary relationship to other Hellenistic poetry; its dialect, language, and style, its transmission. The text and apparatus are based on Gow’s, but differ from his edition of the poem in several significant respects. The commentary is comprehensive, and looks in detail at textual, literary, and philological issues. There is a general index, an index verborum, and an index of passages discussed.
