Discussing the Million Man March of October 16, 1995 as a turning point in the history of African American protest, this volume offers five interpretive contexts to demarcate its cultural The March is analyzed as a struggle within the African American political establishment (1), as an attempt at unified black action against a new politics of white resentment (2), and as the Nation of Islam's (NOI) most visible self-dramatization since its founding in the 1930s (3). Relying on these themes, a rhetorical analysis of Louis Farrakhan's speech at the March uncovers the NOI's uneasy yet intimate relationship with the rituals of American civil religion (4). How do theories, methods, and scholarly practices shape major research projects currently underway in American Studies? In twenty original essays, the contributors to ‘Projecting American Studies’ interrogate their ongoing work in various interdisciplinary contexts, shedding light on contemporary Americanist practices, styles, and publics. In keeping with the original meaning of the French term ‘essai’, each contribution is a try, an attempt, an experiment: Several chapters employ a personal tone, others distill their arguments into condensed prose, some use non-linear formats. All contributors openly reflect on the future of American Studies in its interchange with Literary, Cultural, and Media Studies as well as with History and Political Science. Avoiding the rhetoric of “turns” and paradigm shifts, ‘Projecting American Studies’ aims to replace perennial appeals to do things differently with sustainable ideas for how to do things better.

Media are an inescapable part of collectively shared realities, shaping our daily lives in complex and frequently unintelligible ways. In the wake of recent changes in the field of American Studies, questions of medium and mediality have become a central venue for interdisciplinary research and intradisciplinary self-examination. This volume collects twenty-three essays first presented at the 53rd conference of the German Association of American Studies. All of the essays are concerned in one way or another with the aesthetics and materiality of media. They cover a variety of topics ranging from the intermediality of American literature and the visual mediality of film and photography to the role of media in American politics and the impact of the internet. The volume is divided into five segments: The Book as Medium and the Mediality of Literature; Visual Culture; Intermediality: Image - Music - Text; Politics and the Public Sphere; The Didactics of Media Studies.

This volume explores the current status quo of 'melodrama studies' with respect to theater, prose writing, film, and other genres and forms, spanning a historical range from the eighteenth century to the present time. It starts from the observation that what used to be regarded as a lower form of cultural expression in the first half of the twentieth century, came to be reevaluated markedly in the last decades. These days, melodrama tends to be invoked as a serious and central category to assess the modern cultural imagination and imaginary. Moreover, at a time in which generic classification is becoming increasingly problematical, because genres, be they literary or filmic, are identified less with stable norms, and are understood increasingly as processes, melodrama gains an especially prominent function in literary and cultural studies, since it is seen as cutting across the field of generic identification. The contributions to this volume investigate different manifestations of melodrama and emphasize the multifaceted and heterogeneous character of the melodramatic mode.
