Die „Genetische Geschichte der Philosophie seit Kant“ ist das Hauptwerk von Karl Fortlage. Es beschreibt die einmalige Zeit in der Geschichte der europäischen Philosophie, die zum Ende des 18. und zum Anfang des 19. Jahrhunderts in Deutschland eine Periode hervorgebracht hat, welche in der Geschichte des europäischen Denkens nur mit der großen Entfaltung der griechischen Philosophie zu vergleichen ist. Von Kant über Fichte, Hegel und Schelling zu der Romantik und Schopenhauer, verfolgt der Autor die Entwicklung der deutschen Philosophie und vertritt dabei den eigenen spekulativ metaphysischen Standpunkt. Die vom Autor geprägte Idee des transzendentalen Pantheismus offenbart vor allem den Einfluss von Hegel und Fichte.
