Last Mile Distribution in Disaster Relief Chains
Challenges and Opportunities for the Humanitarian Sector
Humanitarian logistics has gained significant attention due to recent disasters, both natural and man-made. The increasing complexity and dynamism of disaster relief supply chains present unique challenges, as they must adapt quickly to uncertainties and operate efficiently. The focus is on developing fast, agile, and flexible supply chains that can deliver the right emergency supplies swiftly to minimize human suffering and save lives. This thesis explores these critical aspects within the context of supply chain management.

Due to the latest catastrophes caused by both man and nature, humanitarian logistics has received increasing interest from academics, practitioners and specialists. These interests are increased as well by an expanding market of disaster relief and by the fact that disaster relief supply chains are complex and dynamic, not to mention that they have a lot of uncertainties that make operations very complicated. Especially in disaster relief, the supply chains have to be fast, agile and flexible in order to rapidly provide the appropriate amount, and type of emergency supplies, to minimize human suffering or death. The last mile distribution is the final stage of the disaster relief supply chain, i.e. the delivery of relief supplies from local distribution centres to beneficiaries affected by disasters. The aim of this paper is to give an overview of supply chains in disaster relief, identify the main problems of the last mile distribution in disaster relief operations, describe optimization possibilities of the private sector, and examine the applicability for disaster situations.

The central features and performances of technologies are often referred to as if they were living entities, thus they are supposed to act as human agents, simulate human activities, properties or skills. Technomorphic and biomorphic descriptions are not only present in everyday language use, but within the sciences as well. In this book, the authors reflect on the methodological, anthropological as well as normative roles metaphors play in the development and implementation of adaptive and intelligent technologies. The structures, areas of applications and implications of technomorphic and biomorphic descriptions are put under scrutiny in order to provide guiding knowledge for technology developers and policy makers and initiate critical refelctions of exposure to new technologies. Robo- and Informationethics is a new field of applied ethics, which currently undergoes some fascinating and fundamental transformations: the emergence of new types of robotic technologies, such as autonomous systems and artificial agents, generates serious threats to the understanding of human beings as the only strictly autonomously acting entities. In this book, the authors focus on some of the most pressing methodological, ethical and technique-philosophical questions that are connected with the concept of artificial autonomous systems.
