Changes in information structures and requirements necessitate a redefinition of libraries and library science. They must confront new challenges and establish clear research goals and pilot schemes. This collection features 31 original contributions from esteemed authors across Germany, the U.S., Scandinavia, the Netherlands, and Switzerland, addressing key topics such as: the balance between tradition and modern self-perception in library science, the impact of digital media, the role of libraries in society, and their contributions to scientific information and communication. It also explores practical librarianship and the educational aspects of the profession. Key issues discussed include electronic publishing, eLearning, information ethics, the 'Open Access' debate, and fostering information competence beyond universities. The interplay between the economy, politics, and libraries, along with training for effective librarianship, is also examined. Contributions are presented in either German or English, with an appendix containing English abstracts and a comprehensive bilingual index of authors. This work appeals to librarians, information scientists, academics, and students engaged in the creation, collection, and dissemination of professional information.

This publication examines aspects of reducing the ecological footprint in libraries’ workaday operations as well as the social role and responsibility of libraries as leaders in environmental sustainability. The theoretical background and practical applications of contributions made by worldwide libraries to the United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are discussed. General articles and research studies from Finland, Germany, Portugal, and Brazil illuminate libraries’ contributions to the SDGs. Case studies from Sweden, Kenya, Germany, Ukraine, China, and Serbia highlight challenges and opportunities in implementing sustainable approaches in public libraries. Examples of best practice from academic libraries in Hong Kong, Cameroon, Germany, Uganda, USA and Kenya, are presented. All papers published in this book are selected from the best papers of the ENSULIB Satellite Meeting 2017 in Berlin, the ENSULIB/Public Libraries Section’s Open Session at the IFLA Conference 2017 in Poland, and from the IFLA Green Library Award 2017. All articles are written in English.

Die Ergebnisse bibliothekswissenschaftlicher Forschung der praktischen Bibliotheksarbeit vor Ort zugutekommen zu lassen – unter diesem Motto wurden die Beiträge für diese Festschrift zusammengestellt. Es geht um Methoden der Bibliotheks- u. Informationswissenschaft, Öffentliche Bibliotheken, Bibliotheksmanagement u. -marketing, Benutzer- u. Bedarfsforschung, die Bibliothek als Ort, ihre Rolle im Publikationswesen, Fragen zu Ethik und Berufsbild.

Fachleute zeigen in übergreifenden Beiträgen und anhand von konkreten Fallbeispielen sowohl aus Deutschland wie aus anderen Teilen Europas, Asiens, Australiens und den USA, wie der ökologische Fußabdruck im Alltag der Bibliothek verringert werden kann und was Nachhaltigkeit für die soziale Verantwortung von Bibliotheken in ihrer Rolle als gesellschaftliche Multiplikatoren bedeutet. Die Beiträge sind entweder in Deutsch oder Englisch, die Abstracts sind konsequent zweisprachig verfasst. Der Sammelband richtet sich an Bibliothekare in Öffentlichen und in Wissenschaftlichen Bibliotheken sowie in Firmen- und Spezialbibliotheken, an Hochschullehrer und Studierende aus dem Bereich Bibliotheks- und Informationswissenschaft, darüber hinaus an alle, die sich für ökologische Nachhaltigkeit interessieren - Architekten, Bibliotheksträger, Zertifizierungsstellen sowie Bibliotheksorganisationen und verbände.

Öffentliche Bibliotheken befinden sich in einem deutlichen Transformationsprozess. Im Fokus steht nicht mehr der Bestand, sondern der Mensch. Die Bibliothek ist Teil einer Community, der sie dient, deren Mitglieder aber auch mit ihren Kompetenzen und mit ihren Erwartungen Impulse geben und zu ihrer Weiterentwicklung beitragen. Experten aus dem Bibliotheks- und dem Kulturbereich stellen in ihren Beiträgen Positionen, Visionen und neue Konzepte zur Diskussion. In seiner Aktualität stellt der Band eine wichtige Quelle für die Forschung, für die Aus- und Fortbildung und das Studium, aber auch für die bibliothekarische Praxis dar.

Der Band enthält 19 Aufsätze zum Problem der Umstiegs von den deutschen auf internationale Regelwerke und Formate, hier von RAK (Regeln für die Alphabetische Katalogisierung) auf AACR (Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules) und von MAB (Maschinenlesbares Austauschformat für Bibliotheken) auf MARC (MAchine Readable Cataloguing). Der Standardisierungsausschuss bei der Deutschen Bibliothek hat am 20011206 einen entsprechenden Beschluss gefasst, der die Diskussion im deutschen Bibliothekswesen belebt hat.
