Autonomy in Language Learning: Advising in Action
    • This book explores advising in action by focusing on advising programmes and advising tools. There are 11 chapters including a foreword by Christopher Candlin. Chapters in the 'advising programmes' part of the book include details of ways in which support is given for learners (both inside and outside class) through the provision of advising. In addition, contributors show how the principles of advising can be applied to ongoing teacher education, and also to peer advising. In the 'advising tools' section of the book, contributing authors share various tools that can facilitate deep reflection on learning and the advising process, contributors also explore written advising and advisor education. The book was produced as a result of the "Advising for Language Learner Autonomy" conference, an IATEFL Learner Autonomy SIG event held at Kanda University of International Studies in Japan in November 2011. In the developing field of advising, it has become a well referenced resource for researchers and practitioners in the field.

Teaching Fantasy and Science Fiction in the EFL Classroom

Alternative worlds have captivated readers since the beginning of humanity. Today, there is a large body of speculative fiction across a variety of media, including literary texts and films. The aim of the edited work at hand is twofold: provide an overview of selected speculative texts and illustrate the potential of well-known genres such as fantasy, science fiction, and dystopias for the English as a foreign language classroom. The international case studies showcase the attraction of these genres and comprise literary classics as well as more recent examples. Part I is organised into two major sections: primary and secondary level. Part II is devoted to university teaching. All contributions come with concrete suggestions for implementing the texts in foreign language learning settings, paying particular attention to the wide range of students in today's classrooms.

Environmental approaches in ELT have gained momentum in recent years. There is a large body of eco-artefacts across a plethora of media which can be used to develop learners? critical environmental literacies by exploring environment-related issues. 0The contributions to this volume showcase how texts and text assemblages can be employed to help learners interpret the increasingly abnormal vital signs of the planet and take action on climate change.

    • Despite its popularity, the newest wave of dystopian narratives is often viewed as derivative and deficient. This collection proposes a different, more nuanced viewpoint, arguing that contemporary dystopian fiction changes and updates genre conventions to tackle controversial and contemporary issues in complex ways, such as environmental destruction (Julie Bertagna's 'Exodus' (2002), Sacci Lloyd's 'The Carbon Diaries: 2015/2017' (2009, 2010), Julianna Baggott's 'Pure' (2012)), the effects of bio-technological progress gone awry (Lauren DeStefano's 'Chemical Garden' trilogy (2011-2013), Karen Sandler's 'Tankborn' (2011)), or the consequences of war (Lauren Oliver's 'Delirium' (2011)). While the volume's first part collects essays that approach dystopia from a literary and cultural studies perspective, the second part explores the potential that texts such as Veronica Roth's 'Divergent' (2011), Suzanne Collin's 'The Hunger Games' (2008) or David Macaulay's graphic novel 'BAA' (1985) have for the EFL classroom.

    • This the first extensive study of the graphic narratives of Alison Bechdel, one of the most renowned and influential cartoonists and graphic novelists of our time. Over the last few decades, a wealth of publications on the growing medium of graphic fiction has become available. The contribution of this volume to this body of work is to explore Bechdel’s oeuvre from her earlier cartoons to her contemporary full-length graphic memoirs, particularly chronicling her formative years. Employing a number of case studies from Bechdel’s work, this publication shows how Bechdel plays with the medium-specific characteristics of graphic narratives in order to trace back the complex relationship with her parents and the development of her own gender identities.

    • Although comics have become an essential part of the university curricula, schools are still reluctant as far as the use of graphic fiction in the classroom is concerned. This book is meant to contribute to the efforts to close the gap that still exists between secondary and tertiary education when it comes to taking account of one of the most popular cultural manifestations. It will do so by concentrating on the use of comics in diverse learning and teaching scenarios at primary and secondary levels. Consequently, the present volume will provide a general introduction to the teaching of the comic medium in its own right. Most of all, it combines current approaches to EFL methodology such as CLIL and intercultural communication and how comic books can contribute to the success of learner-centred language learning. "Teaching Comics in the Foreign Language Classroom is a very well-researched and highly readable book. It provides a thorough introduction to the field by bringing together comics-, ELT-, literature and culture-related theoretical perspectives. Moreover, the theories are applied to concrete topics ranging from Shakespeare comics to case studies on 9/11 graphic novels or a comic book on Nelson Mandela. This is a book that both academics and teachers will highly value.” (Werner Delanoy)

The environmental impact of traditional waste management practice has become a central concern in industrialized countries. The past decades have seen a dramatic development in the technology for reducing air pollution caused by incineration as stipulated by clean air policies in industrialized countries. Toxic and/or valuable and rare elements are still dispersed into the environment under current practice for the disposal of treated or untreated waste materials. This book results from the discussion among scientists, engineers and authorities; and hopes to contribute towards the implementation of future sustainable waste management practices.
