François Caron (1600–1673), faszinierende Persönlichkeit des 17. Jahrhunderts, kam früh zur führenden Welthandelsmacht, der niederländischen ostindischen Kompanie (VOC). Dort absolvierte er eine glanzvolle Karriere. Er wurde beauftragt, eine landeskundliche Studie über Japan zu verfassen. Carons Zeitgenossen haben den Wert dieses Werkes sofort erkannt. Es wurde ein Bestseller des 17. Jahrhunderts, das in 25 Ausgaben, Übersetzungen und Neudrucken erschien. Seine Darstellung ist auch heute noch spannend zu lesen. Ein früher Bericht über ein Land, das sich bereits zu dieser Zeit gegenüber europäischer Einflußnahme und christlicher Mission abzuschließen begann.
