Les mille-pattes, les arachnides et les insectes sont souvent ignorés. Pourtant on les rencontre partout et leur biologie, parfois très originale, justifierait à elle seule que l'on s'intéresse à eux. Ce guide, un des seuls sur le sujet, contient les principaux arthropodes terrestres de la région méditerranéenne. Par les indications qu'il donne sur la biologie de ces espèces et par son introduction sur les milieux méditerranéens, cet ouvrage nous ouvre tout un monde vivant, très proche de nous, nous permettant ainsi de rencontrer et d'observer ces animaux qui nous entourent.

All organ systems of mesothelid spiders are revised and supplemented with new information. This concerns particularly the eyes, which were studied by TKM comparing the data with previous results. Based on ultrastructure, histology and experimental observations a hypothesis on vision in heptathelid spiders is proposed. The ultrastructure of the mesothelid tarsal organ and the trichobothria is described for the first time. Both organs are equipped with numerous sensory cells. The respiratory capabilitiy of mesothelids is investigated and discussed in relation to mygalomorph and araneomorph spiders, which represent the two major taxa of opisthothelid Araneae. A special chapter is devoted to the morphology and function of the male palpal organ which is compared to respective organs in mygalomorph and araneomorph spiders. Its function is explained using morphological and experimental data. Ecological aspects deal with the habitats of Mesothelae and especially microbial diseases. In the chapter on taxonomy current problems concerning mesothelid species are critically discussed from a general zoological perspective.

Immer wieder begegnet ihm die Frage nach dem Sinn des Lebens. Die vielfältigen Antworten taugen jedoch nicht, den Alltag zu begreifen, denn jede Antwort eröffnet neue Fragen. Die Kinderfrage „Warum?“ versteht der Autor als Quelle allen Wissens. Wissen ist Bedingung für Begreifen, auch von Gott und Vaterland. Ohne Begreifen gibt es zweifelhaftes oder gar kein Handeln. Jeder Einzelne bewegt nichts, fast nichts. Aber die Summe dieser Nichts macht den Gang der Dinge aus.
