Fortement contestée lors de sa parution (1994) aux Etats-Unis, cette biographie d'un éminent connaisseur de Brecht est presque un règlement de compte, presque une démolition. Se référant au sous-titre, il rétablit les droits d'auteur de ses femmes qui composèrent son oeuvre, il montre son inconséquence politique, il nie et ironise l'innovation théâtrale et présente l'homme comme un poète médiocre, malpropre et malodorant. Quoiqu'il en soit, un tableau de civilisation, une percée dans le monde dramaturgique et une remise en cause de l'époque.

Backed up by previously unpublished papers and interviews with Brecht's colleagues and lovers, this biography argues that Brecht was not in fact the author of the plays which have given him his iconic stature, and claims they were written in a sex-for-text scheme by his mistresses.
