Lichens and lichenicolous fungi from New Guinea
A microscopical Atlas of some tropical Lichens from SE-Asia (Thailand, Cambodia, Philippines, Vietnam) - Volume 2
    • As a result of a lichenological expedition to New Guinea in 1992, 298 new or otherwise interesting taxa, mainly of microlichens and lichenicolous funghi, are presented. These include 269 species recorded for the first time from the island. Of these, 115 were known before from adjacent tropical Asia or Australasia. Another 66 were only known from the areas further away, usually the neotropics or the northern temperate zone, and are new records for tropical Asia and Australasia. The remainder appear to be completely unknown; for these, 6 new genera and 89 new species are described, including one more species from East Africa. New combinations are proposed for 10 species, and 2 genus names and 5 species names are reduced to synonymy. For many species details of morphology and chemistry are given. The total known lichen flora of New Guinea is now ca. 1000 species. The geographical affinities of the lichen flora vary with altitude. While the endemic element seems rather constant at all elevations except above 4000 m, the widespread temperate element increases with elevation, in the same way as the pantropical and the palaeotropical elements decrease. The palaeotropical element includes few taxa which extend into Africa. There is new evidence to show a floristical affinity with New Zealand and temperate Australia.

    • Biodiversity and ecology of lichens

      Liber Amicorum Harrie Sipman

      • 439pages
      • 16 heures de lecture

This volume on lichen biodiversity and ecology is dedicated to Harrie Sipman and features 29 peer-reviewed contributions by 50 authors. While focusing on tropical lichen biodiversity and ecology, it also includes related topics. Essential for lichenologists, it contains keys for various lichen genera. Full monographs are provided for the reinstated genus Herpothallon (29 species), and new genera Diaphorographis (2 species), Sipmaniella (1 species), Synarthothelium (2 species), and Placopyrenium (14 species, 3 varieties). Keys are included for cryptothalline species of Lecidea, the lichenicolous genus Sphaerellothecium, and species of Cryptothecia and Stirtonia in Thailand. The genus Trypetheliopsis is reestablished for Musaespora, with relevant combinations made. Many papers describe new species from genera such as Bacidia, Buellia, Caloplaca, and others. Notably, a newly described Thelopsis is suggested to be intermediate between it and Topelia, indicating a potential unification of these genera. Floristic studies cover lichens from diverse regions, including Montenegro, Korea, Japan, and Namibia, with new synonymies and combinations. One paper discusses lichens and global warming, while three phylogenetic studies examine lichen groups with cyanobacteria and propose a systematic placement for the enigmatic genus Tylophoron. The volume is richly illustrated with color photographs, including those of all Herpothallon species.

    • Pyrenocarpous lichens with bitunicate asci

A first assessment of the lichen biodiversity inventory in Costa Rica

      • 162pages
      • 6 heures de lecture

This publication provides an extensive treatment of the pyrenocarpous lichens with bitunicate asci (excluding Porinaceae, Myeloconidaceae and chiefly saxicolous genera) in Costa Rica, with keys, descriptions, and taxonomic discussion. A total of 181 species is treated, the majority of which are reported from the country for the first time, and several taxa are new to the Neotropics. Names reported or listed by earlier authors, in particular those by Müller Argoviensis and Dodge in the late 19th and early 20th century, were critically revised, and many turned out to belong to other taxa.

This book mostly illustrates recently collected lichens from the Brazilian state of Rondônia, which is a an Amazonian state bordering Bolivia. Although it is 5000 km from the see, it is already lowland at around 100 m altitude. For several species it is the first pulished colour picture.
