The book contains papers presented at an international colloquium which has taken place at regular intervals (since 1985) and which is devoted to the contrasting study of the French language in Europe and Canada. In 2007 the focus was on the different varieties of French that can be observed in France and in Canada. Here specialists from Canada, France and Germany present their research results in the fields of phonetics and phonology, vocabulary and lexicography, word formation, history of the French language and the history of (French) place names in present-day Canada.

The subject of ethno-cultural minorities and their integration is looming increasingly large in Quebec. Accordingly, the papers presented at the Trier colloquium are devoted to immigration and the minorities in this Canadian province. Their concern is with the multiple links constituting inter-ethnic relations there. The range of topics extends from linguistic matters to literary, historical and political aspects of immigration and minority groups. The subjects investigated in the context of immigration are not limited to allophone groups but also include the two founder peoples. The multidisciplinary approach of the volume casts an interesting light on some intriguing facets of Quebec's ethnic diversity.

Das Jahr 1492 markiert einen Wendepunkt in der Geschichte der spanischen Sprache bzw. Sprachwissenschaft. Die „Gramática de la lengua castellana“ von Antonio de Nebrija ist die erste umfassende Abhandlung über eine romanische Volkssprache. In dasselbe Jahr fällt auch die Ankunft von Christoph Kolumbus in der sogenannten „Neuen Welt“. In der Folge kommt es zum ersten Mal zu einem gezielten Export einer europäischen Kultur auf einen anderen Kontinent, der auch in sprachlicher Hinsicht neue Herausforderungen mit sich bringt: die Verbreitung der Volkssprache, die Problematik der Sprachwahl in Bezug auf die Evangelisierung sowie der Kontakt mit und die wissenschaftliche Beschreibung der indigenen Sprachen, um nur einige zu nennen. Dieser Band versucht, auf einige dieser Fragen Antworten zu geben.
