Engler's Syllabus of Plant Families has since its first publication in 1887 aimed to provide both the research, and particularly the student with a concise survey of the plant kingdom as a whole, presenting all higher systematic units right down to families and genera of plants and fungi. In 1954, more than 60 years ago, the 12th edition of the well-known "Syllabus der Pflanzenfamilien" ("Syllabus of Plant Families"), set a standard. Now, the completely restructured and revised 13th edition of Engler's Syllabus published in 5 parts and in English language for the first time also considers molecular data, which have only recently become available in order to provide an up-to-date evolutionary and systematic overview of the plant and fungal groups treated. -- back cover.

1960 hatte Eberhard Fischer Gelegenheit, seinen Vater, den Kunstethnologen Hans Himmelheber, auf einer grossen Westafrika-Expedition zu begleiten. Eigentlich sollte er nur die Maskenschnitzer des Dan-Volkes bei ihrer Arbeit und ihr Auftreten bei Festen filmen. Doch die starken Bildhauerpersönlichkeiten beeindruckten den jungen Mann so sehr, dass er begann, auch ihre Lebensgeschichten aufzuzeichnen. Er dokumentierte ausführlich die künstlerische Arbeitsweise und sammelte ihre Werke. Der nun ins Englische übersetzte Text erschien erstmals 1963 auf Deutsch in einer ethnologischen Fachzeitschrift. Die vier Biografien und zahlreiche im Buch gezeigten Fotografien von Maskenschnitzern aus dem Hinterland Liberias sind in der Erforschung afrikanischer Kunst einmalig, da in vielen dieser Kulturen Masken im Geheimen geschnitzt werden. Bis vor kurzem wurden von Kunstethnologen und Sammlern zwar die Werke, aber kaum je die sie erschaffenden Menschen wahrgenommen. Das neue Buch bringt Fischers Essay erweitert um zusätzliche Abbildungen und ein Nachwort. Eine DVD mit den historischen Filmaufnahmen der Künstler bei der Arbeit ergänzt das Buch.
