The Austrian writer Robert Musil ranks among the foremost novelists of the 20th century. Despite a series of lesser but well-regarded shorter works, his literary reputation rests almost entirely on his novel Der Mann ohne Eigenschaften (The Man without Qualities), a life-work in the truest sense, which became the focus of all his energies and thinking from 1924 until his death in 1942. This study analyzes the principal trends in scholarship on the novel from the 1960s to the present. It contrasts earlier criticism, which foregrounded the eponymous central character's search for identity against the background of subject theory or mysticism, with more recent criticism, whichhas focused on aesthetic and ethical approaches to the novel within the broader context of theories of value. Ausgehend von der Annahme eines Spatial Turn in der jüngsten Literaturwissenschaft werden in diesem Band die neuesten Forschungen zu Raumfragen in der Moderne vorgestellt. Kleist's narratives convey a strong sense of structure, while describing the ubiquity of disorder in the imaginary world. A narrative paradigm, the contract, is advanced to analyse this interplay of pattern and disorder. The contract, it is argued, characterizes the relationships between the figures of the stories and stands for the broader concept of the written word as a guarantor of meaning - that is, as the medium between poet and reader. This study, then, must reflect on the possibility of legitimate communication - and of interpretation - in narrative.

Vor allem sein Roman „Der Mann ohne Eigenschaften“ macht Robert Musil zu einem der wichtigsten deutschsprachigen Autoren des 20. Jahrhunderts. Doch auch die anderen Werke sind nicht nur für den Literaturwissenschaftler von großem Interesse - etwa die Erzählung „Die Verwirrungen des Zöglings Törleß“ oder das Drama „Die Schwärmer“. Sie alle werden von Musil-Fachmann Tim Mehigan kompetent vorgestellt und interpretiert.

Christian Grawe, der seit drei Jahrzehnten an der Universität Melbourne Germanistik lehrt, hat sich in den achtziger Jahren immer mehr dem Romanwerk Fontanes zugewandt und den Lesern des geistreichen Preußen 1981 ein typisch angelsächsisches Hilfsmittel, einen „Führer durch die Romane Theodor Fontanes“ geschenkt. Textausgaben, Interpretationen und zuletzt auch eine „Fontane-Chronik“ (1998) weisen Grawe als einen der aktivsten Fontane-Forscher der Gegenwart aus. Zusammen mit seiner Frau Ursula hat Grawe sechs Romane von Jane Austen ins Deutsche übertragen und 1988 eine Darstellung ihres Lebenswerkes vorgelegt. Mit dieser Vermittlung Austens nach Deutschland hat der Germanist in Melbourne eine der vornehmsten Aufgaben des kenntnisreichen Anwalts beider Kulturen wahrgenommen. Anläßlich seines 65. Geburtstags haben Freunde und Kollegen aus Deutschland, Australien und Neuseeland für Christian Grawe Beiträge zu seinem Thema „Roman und Ästhetik im 19. Jahrhundert“ geschrieben. Sechs der dreizehn Aufsätze beschäftigen sich mit Fontane. Goethes „Wahlverwandtschaften“, Schopenhauers Ästhetik, Grillparzers Novellen, Stifters „Nachsommer“, das Verhältnis von Erzähler und Photographie (Raabe) und die deutsche Literatur im „Times Literary Supplement“ 1902-1960 sind weitere Themen. Ein Schriftenverzeichnis von Christian Grawe beschließt den Band.
