Recent trends in postcolonial and intercultural studies have led to a marked development towards concepts of transculturalism and cosmopolitanism. The articles collected in this volume discuss how cultural and literary theories are related to these much-debated issues. Experts from Germany, Austria and Italy have collected their theoretical approaches to and case studies of pertinent literary texts in this volume. The invitation to join in the project was occasioned by the 70th birthday of Rüdiger Ahrens, himself a much-travelled scholar in this field, and extended to scholars with whom he has collaborated over many years. Der vorliegende Band präsentiert Ergebnisse der Arbeit des Zentrums für Inter- und Transkulturelle Studien (CITS) der Philosophischen Fakultät der Universität zu Köln. Zentrale Fragen der Kulturwissenschaften im Zeichen der Globalisierung werden hier aus interdisziplinärer Perspektive untersucht. Dabei werden bekannte Paradigmen wie jene der Multi- und Interkulturalität durch neuere Ansätze im Sinne einer transkulturellen Verfasstheit von Kultur(en) ergänzt. Neben theoretischen Überlegungen stehen immer auch praktische Konsequenzen im Zentrum der Analysen. Dabei ergeben sich neue Perspektiven für künftige akademische Forschung und Lehre, aber auch für Denken und Handeln in der globalisierten Welt jenseits der Universitätsmauern. Dies bedingt eine Überschreitung traditioneller Fächergrenzen und den Dialog zwischen unterschiedlichen disziplinären Positionen. Daher verbindet dieser Band Ansätze und Perspektiven der philologischen Fächer wie etwa der Anglistik, Skandinavistik, Romanistik, Lateinamerikanistik, Japanologie oder Sinologie mit solchen der Kommunikationswissenschaft, der postkolonialen Studien, der Soziologie, der Philosophie und der Pädagogik.

This volume presents a series of in-depth studies of particular authors or specific aspects of Germany in Canadian literature and culture, present and past. Individual investigations resonate with each other, adding up to a larger picture of Canada's views on Germany and things German in all their richness, complexity and historical persistence.

Anglophone literary and cultural studies have been characterized in recent years by a marked growth of interest in literatures in English not only from the British Isles and from the United States of America, but from many other regions of the world. Whether the vast body of the texts which have thus been made the object of critical research are tackled under the paradigms of postcolonial studies or whether we prefer to negotiate and refer to them as examples of the so-called New English Literatures, the inter- and multicultural frameworks of such writings place them in many-facetted international contexts which produce a polyphonic cultural dialogism of heterogeneous voices and ideas. The essays collected here offer critical case studies of Anglophone writings in their international contexts as well as theoretical conceptualizations of major cultural factors. The list of contributors includes Bill Ashcroft. Malcolm Bradbury, Andrew Parkin, Helen Tiffin, Bart Moore-Gilbert and many more scholars from all around the world.

Born on January 3, 1939, Rüdiger Ahrens studied English, French, Philosophy, and Pedagogy at Göttingen, Erlangen, and Dijon. After serving as an assistant professor at the University of Hannover, he became a full professor of English at the University of Trier in the 1970s. In 1980, he moved to the University of Würzburg, where he continues to teach English Cultural Studies and has held visiting professorships at institutions such as Cambridge, Tokyo, Nanchang, and Beijing. Ahrens has a deep interest in the cultural functions of literature, reflected in his extensive body of work. His critical writings range from his dissertation on Francis Bacon's essays to studies of Shakespeare and contemporary British drama, showcasing a rigorous inquiry into literary forms and their cultural contexts. He has also explored literary theory and the role of literature in intercultural education. The articles in this Festschrift, while only a fraction of Ahrens's broad scholarly contributions, engage with many of his central concerns, highlighting the significance of his work in the current landscape of English studies.

Atwood, Ondaatje, Munro, Hémon, Tremblay, Hébert - diese Namen stehen für die kanadische Literatur, die losgelöst von der US-amerikanischen Tradition ihre eigenen Merkmale aufweist. Die Fähigkeit zu produktivem, adäquatem und verständnisorientiertem Denken, Verstehen und Handeln in kulturellen Kontakträumen und -situationen gewinnt in Zeiten wachsender internationaler Verflechtung und stetig fortschreitender Globalisierung immer mehr an Bedeutung, und so stellt die Vermittlung interkultureller Kompetenz nicht mehr nur ein zentrales Anliegen der fremdsprachlichen Fächer dar, sondern hat sich zu einem der wichtigsten fächerübergreifenden Lehr- und Lernziele in den Geisteswissenschaften entwickelt. Die Beiträge dieses interdisziplinär angelegten Bandes stellen interkulturelle Kompetenz als komplexes Phänomen dar und analysieren dessen diverse Komponenten, um daraus Schlussfolgerungen für die Planung, Organisation, Durchführung und Evaluation interkulturell orientierter Lehre zu ziehen. Die kritische historische Perspektive wird dabei ergänzt durch die Formulierung von Desideraten und konkreten Vorschlägen für eine künftig zu vermittelnde interkulturelle Bildung.
