There are no simple solutions in the Anthropocene era. Every single person lives in a highly complex system and is connected to it by his or her actions. By focusing on the example of alimentation, this interconnectedness can be exposed and presented in a form that everyone can understand. Comics as a communication medium not only have the potential to make complex issues accessible in an appealing form; the comic-making process itself can inspire scientific work, and reveal new connections. This proceedings volume includes contributions on alimentation and comic theory by Jaqueline Berndt, Anne-Kathrin Kuhlemann, Toni Meier, Veronika Mischitz, Stephan Packard, Lukas Plank, Nick Sousanis, Katerina Teaiwa and Arnold van Huis. It is the result of the two-day symposium Science meets Comics, held in October 2015 in the Cluster of Excellence Image Knowledge Gestaltung. An Interdisciplinary Laboratory at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, which discussed and developed these new means of communication in relation to alimentation.

Die inhaltliche Gestaltung des Comics steht im Zeichen des Eintritts in eine neue erdgeschichtliche Epoche – das Anthropozän, das Zeitalter des Menschen. In unserem globalen Wirken hinterlassen wir zunehmend Spuren, die unseren Planeten dauerhaft verändern. Gerade die Küche ist ein zentraler Ort, in dem diese Zusammenhänge auf individueller Ebene aufscheinen, denn ähnlich wie die im Buch dargestellten Personen ist jeder einzelne von uns Verbraucher und damit auch Auftraggeber mannigfacher Produktionsketten und gestaltet so die Welt, in der wir leben, mit.

Do we have the right recipes for the world of the future? Science meets comics. Twelve illustrators from different cultural backgrounds take readers on a culinary journey through the continents, providing fascinating insights into a multitude of eating habits and food cultures from around the world. With its subjectively told and individually illustrated stories, this comic not only unveils human beings' varied use and management of available resources, it also sheds light on the effects of this approach on global material flows. Phosphorus plays a central role in this context due to its paramount importance for all living things. Both the content and design of the comic are influenced by the advent of a new geological epoch – the Anthropocene, the Age of Man. Human activities across the globe are leaving increasing marks on the planet that will change it forever. The kitchen, especially, is a place where these correlations become evident on a personal scale. Indeed, just like the individuals depicted in this book, each one of us is a user and thus a sponsor of diverse production chains: in turn, each one of us has the opportunity to influence the world we live in.
