Seit den Bundestagswahlen von 1998 ist die PDS ein bedeutender Akteur im deutschen politischen System, wenngleich sich ihre Hochburgen bei Wahlen ebenso wie ihre organisatorischen Schwerpunkte ausschließlich auf dem Territorium der ehemaligen DDR befinden. Die Partei erscheint 2002 in ihrer programmatischen Logik und außenpolitischen Konzeption als radikale Antisystempartei mit extremistischem und totalitärem Ansatz. Sie ist keine kommunistische Partei leninistischen Typs mehr, sondern weist neo- und post-kommunistische Züge zugleich auf. Wie eine Auswertung aller programmatischen Texte der Partei – der »Reformer« ebenso wie der »Fundamentalisten« – zeigt, wurzelt ihr Politikverständnis tief in marxistischer Ideologie.
