Ne a Riga en 1836, George Schweinfurth se voua, tres jeune encore, a l'etude de la botanique, devint docteur es sciences naturelles, et fut charge de classer et de decrire les plantes que Freiher von Barnim, compagnon du Dr Hartmann, avait rapportees, en 1860, de la region du Haut-Nil, ou ce malheureux jeune homme etait mort. Enthousiasme par les richesses que renfermait cette collection, Schweinfurth partit pour l'Egypte, herborisa dans le Delta, parcourut la mer Rouge pendant plusieurs mois dans son propre bateau, franchit la cote, suivit la frontiere d'Abyssinie, arriva a Khartoum; puis, sa bourse etant vide, revint en Europe, ne songeant plus qu'a reprendre la suite de ses travaux.
