Ce livre est un document historique de premier plan, tant par la personnalité de son auteur que par son contenu. Publié en 1931, Les Pervesions sexuelles fit connaître aux Français la doctrine du célèbre docteur Magnus Hirschfeld, le fondateur de l'Institut des sciences sexuelles de Berlin. On peut, à ce titre, le considérer comme un compendium des connaissances en sexologie au début des années 1930, d'une importance identique au mythique Psychopathia sexualis de Krafft-Ebing paru au siècle précédent. Mais ce n'est pas tout, cet ouvrage fut, en 1933, le tout premier à être jeté au bûcher par les nazis, très vite suivi par la totalité de la bibliothèque de l'Institut des sciences sexuelles. Il inaugura ainsi des autodafés de sinistre mémoire. A ce double titre, le livre Les Perversions sexuelles mérite d'être lu tant par les curieux, que par les étudiants et les érudits.

One of the founders of the scientific study of sex, Magnus Hirschfeld, M.D. (1868-1935), led the field in objective examinations of homosexuality, transvestism, and gender identity. The Homosexuality of Men and Women was designed to provide a unified, comprehensive description of homosexuality which would rid heterosexuals of homophobic prejudice and allow gays and lesbians to accept themselves and stop feeling isolated.This encyclopedic study opens with a definition and a detailed biological diagnosis of orientation, including the childhood and adolescent phases. Hirschfeld addresses the physical, mental, and emotional life, while explaining the differences between friendship and same-sex love; genuine and false homosexuality; and the inborn nature of homosexuality and bisexuality. He also disputes the theory that homosexuality is treatable.In the second half of the book, Hirschfeld looks at community life, bonding, roles in society, history, persecution, victimization, and the law. His documentation of gays in the military and the "new technology" of his day-such as the telephone and airplanes and their affect on the lives of homosexuals-offers farsighted observations that strongly parallel today's national debates and new developments.

Berichte eines sexologischen Weltenbummlers Vieles an diesem Buch ist ungewöhnlich. Es beginnt damit, dass Magnus Hirschfeld bei der Abfahrt "eine Reise um die Welt weder beabsichtigt noch geplant hatte". Auch war er kein bummelnder Tourist, sondern ein Mann mit einer Mission: Er hält auf seiner Reise - häufig zum milden Erstaunen der in der Tropensonne träge gewordenen Kolonialeuropäer - in 500 Tagen 176 Vorträge. Sein Thema ist immer das gleiche: Sexologie. Denn noch spannender als Canyons, Tempel und Grandhotels sind für ihn die sexuellen Gepflogenheiten der Landesbewohner. So steht auf Hirschfelds Besuchsprogramm ganz selbstverständlich neben dem Kirschblütenfest in Japan das Bordellviertel in Yokohama, eine Begegnung mit japanischen Frauendarstellern, die Suche nach Phallussteinen und die Beantwortung der Frage, ob es das gefürchtete "Verschwinden des Penis" tatsächlich gibt. Bestechend ist dabei die Energie und auch die Vorurteilslosigkeit, mit der der Forscher zu Werke ging - denn neben seiner auch heute noch verblüffenden Begeisterung für die Sexualfreundlichkeit des Islam stellt er immer wieder fest, wie ungewöhnlich lebenstüchtig die Sprösslinge von Mischlingsehen sind. Kein Wunder, dass Hirschfeld bei seiner Rückkehr in Berlin wenig beliebt war und die Erstausgabe seiner Weltreise 1933 nicht dort, sondern in Zürich herauskam.
