The conference volume Frictions and Failures – Cultural Encounters in Crisis focuses on those dynastic marriages which ran into difficulties of various kinds, and examines a wide range of cases in order to determine what caused these problems. Conflict situations could easily arise from the queen consort’s presence at her new court. These conflicts might be religious (consorts were often of a different faith from that of their husband and new country), personal (rivalries with mistresses or favorites), diplomatic, or political. The case studies elucidate what these frictions tell us a) about the specific context in which they occurred, and b) about the problems, limitations and challenges of cultural transfer in general. The volume also considers (in a broader sense) whether “success” and “failure” are adequate and helpful terms in assessing the impact of the queen’s consort. The geographical range of the territories discussed covers not only West and Central Europe but extends to Hungary, Lithuania, Muscovy, and Russia. This is particularly valuable as it helps to take orthodox consorts into consideration, as well as the elective monarchy of Poland, in which the role of the consort is, by definition, different from that of a consort in a system of dynastic succession.

The Jagiellon dynasty is part of the most significant dynasties in mid-eastern Europe. It is especially remarkable through its supra regional influence, controlling an area reaching from the Baltic Sea to the Black an Adriatic Sea. Their rule is marked by cultural and political change on the threshold from the Late Middle Ages to the Early Modern Period a period characterised by transformation. The book demonstrates how the Jagiellon dynasty influenced mid-eastern Europe's history of the time and is the first modern work in a western European language on the topic.

Martin Gruneweg, ein Kaufmannssohn aus Danzig, unternahm in der zweiten Hälfte des 16. Jahrhunderts als Schreiber umfangreiche Handelsreisen mit armenischen Kaufherren in Lemberg. Seine lebendigen Aufzeichnungen über Mittel-, Ost-, Südost- und Südeuropa bieten wertvolle Einblicke in die wirtschaftlichen und kulturellen Zentren seiner Zeit. 1588 trat er in den Dominikanerorden ein und bewegte sich damit in einem polnischen katholischen Umfeld. Gruneweg berichtete über den Hof in Warschau, den Handelsmechanismus in Danzig und das Zusammenleben verschiedener Ethnien in Lemberg. Seine Aufzeichnungen sind eine bedeutende Quelle zur Religions- und Kirchengeschichte und spiegeln die Geisteswelt eines nicht studierten Klosterbruders des späten 16. Jahrhunderts wider. Die Edition seiner Aufzeichnungen, herausgegeben vom DHI Warschau, eröffnet weitreichende Forschungsmöglichkeiten. Der Band vereint Beiträge einer internationalen Konferenz, die 2008 zur Veröffentlichung der Edition organisiert wurde und zeigt die Vielfalt der Auswertungsmöglichkeiten auf. Die Edition umfasst mehrere Bände mit Manuskripten, Einleitungen, Beilagen und Registern, und bietet mit 1900 Seiten und 424 Abbildungen eine umfassende Grundlage für die Forschung.

Wann immer ein König oder ein Prinz eine Frau aus einem anderen Land heiratet, stoßen zwei oder mehr Kulturen aufeinander. Die Gemahlin spricht häufig eine andere Sprache als die des Hofes ihres Gatten, gehört einer anderen Konfession an, ist in einer anderen Hofkultur aufgewachsen. Ganz gleich, ob sie sich in die neue Umgebung integriert oder sich dieser verweigert – sie bewirkt eine Transformation ihrer allernächsten Umgebung. Denn sie ist umgeben von ihrem eigenen Gefolge, und aus ihrer Heimat bringt sie Bücher, Kunst, Kleidung, Schmuck und Möbel mit. Sie erreicht den neuen Hof aber nicht nur mit materiellem, sondern auch mit intellektuellem Gepäck wie etwa religiösen, politischen, philosophischen oder wissenschaftlichen Vorstellungen und Einflüssen. Welche europäischen Wege die Heiraten königlicher Prinzessinnen gingen, wird in vorliegender Edition von Akten zu Hochzeit, Tod und Erbe von Zofia Jagiellonka, verheirateter Herzogin von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel (1522–1575), nachgezeichnet.

Until recently, there have not been many researches on border zones in Early Modern Europe. For the time before the emergence of nation-states, however, it is convenient to think in European cases, which indicate instability or cooperation in these zones of contact. Three representative geographic regions have been central to an international conference, which was questioning the specificities of zones of fracture. Poland-Lithuania has been linked with two zones (the Baltic Sea and the Balkans). The Northern Italian States were situated between two tectonic regions (the Balkans and the Rhine valley). The Balkans by themselves were divided into various mini zones, and confronted with the Ottoman Empire. The panels did not only try to look for comparisons, but intended to find out the complexity and the different experiences within zones of frontiers in an European context. The overlapping of various lines, especially in the fields of law, taxes and the Church has been brought into sharper focus.
