    Walter Crane était un artiste et illustrateur de livres anglais, considéré comme l'un des contributeurs les plus importants au motif de la chambre d'enfant dans le genre de la littérature illustrée pour enfants anglaise à ses débuts à la fin du XIXe siècle. Son œuvre présentait certains des débuts les plus colorés et détaillés des motifs d'enfants dans le jardin qui caractériseraient de nombreuses comptines et histoires pour enfants pendant des décennies. Il faisait partie du mouvement Arts and Crafts et a produit une gamme de peintures, d'illustrations, de livres pour enfants, de carreaux de céramique et d'autres arts décoratifs. Crane est également connu pour la création d'une série d'images emblématiques associées au mouvement socialiste international.
