Striche sind zeichenbare Gedanken und oft präziser als Worte. Nur zeichenbare Ideen können in einen gestalterischen Entwurf übertragen werden. 1D, die «erste Dimension», ist somit der Ausgangspunkt des Entwurfsprozesses, sei es in der Ausbildung oder in der beruflichen Praxis. Die Publikation stellt das Erlernen und die Funktion des Zeichnens in den Mittelpunkt. Dafür werden zeichnerische Arbeiten, die an der Schule für Gestaltung in Basel entstanden sind, entlang eines Begriffssystems in Form einer «Netzkarte» kommentiert. Dieses gibt zum einen die Qualitäten der Zeichnungen wieder und liefert zum anderen das Vokabular, um über den komplexen Prozess des Zeichnens überhaupt kommunizieren zu können – mit dem Ziel immer besserer Ergebnisse. Ein einführender Essay setzt sich auseinander mit dem Zeichnen als Wahrnehmungs- und Umsetzungsprozess; abgerundet wird das Buch durch Statements renommierter Gestalterinnen und Gestalter – begleitet durch eine Originalzeichnung – zur Bedeutung des Zeichnens in ihrem Schaffen.

Professor Germer investigates a genre not hitherto isolated, the «Novel of Education», which he separates from the «Bildungsroman». A complete bibliography of almost four hundred numbers was compiled. The content of these books was then tabulated according to aims, vices, virtues, social positions etc., and a list of formal characteristics was added. As a result, this work is a major contribution to the study of the later phases of «Enlightenment», rich in quotations and references and useful also for further studies.

This volume is a continuation of Professor Germer's earlier work, The German Novel of Education from 1793 to 1805. Together the two volumes represent the most comprehensive and detailed study of this genre yet undertaken. Germer distinguishes the Novel of Education («belehrender Roman») from the «Bildungsroman», which chronicles the development of a hero through trial and error to the attainment of his own station in life. The Novel of Education, on the other hand, offers the reader practical advice and instruction on religion, health, virtue and vice, and interpersonal relations. In the first chapter of his analysis Germer compiles an extensive bibliography. The second chapter examines the treatment of common man as revealed in this realistic fiction. The final chapters are devoted to the contemporary publishing scene and formal characteristics of the genre. The study represents a significant contribution to the study of «Volksaufklärung».
