    Karl Emil Franzos fut un romancier autrichien populaire de la fin du XIXe siècle. Ses œuvres, tant de reportage que de fiction, se concentraient sur les régions multiethniques de Galicie, de Podolie et de Bucovine, aujourd'hui en grande partie en Ukraine, là où se rencontraient les empires des Habsbourg et de Russie.
