In contrast to other works, the linguistic approach to rhythm presented in this book does not start from decontextualized structures but from performance data in a bottom-up fashion. Drawing on Halliday's distinction between wording, writing, and sounding, the proposed model takes account of several levels of abstraction. Important categories for data analysis are syllable rhythm and accent rhythm, which interact to establish prominence patterns (peaks and valleys) that can be observed in spontaneous and prepared speech, readings and recitals. Excluding subjective factors of analysis, the new model offers a tool to describe the rhythmic potential of prose and verse and to evaluate rhythmic performances of reading and reciting.

This is a comprehensive introduction to English text-linguistics. It deals with those areas of text-linguistics that have enjoyed widespread attention in English linguistics, notably aspects of cohesion and coherence. Further topics are corpus-based studies in lexical patterns and in text classifications, psycholinguistic and cognitive studies in text constitution and decoder-orientation. One special feature of this book is that it not only covers abstract lexical and grammatical structures but also medium-dependent written and spoken presentation.

The book offers the first coherent theory of presentation in Language, i. e. stylistic choices that are used to facilitate or influence the decoding of verbal messages in the spoken and the written medium. It explores systematically the relations between the abstract Language system and its manifestations in speech and writing. Challenging the phonocentricity of many structuralist approaches it argues for medium-independent word-forms and structures. These carriers of propositional and presentational information are supplemented by medium-dependent expression systems, notably intonation and typography, which present the medium-independent structure in concrete communicative Settings.
