Die Entwicklung des Fachs Bibliothekswissenschaft als Universitätsdisziplin in Deutschland wird ebenso wie seine gegenwärtige Situation im Anschluss an die Behandlung dieser Thematik beim Ersten Kölner Kolloquium (1969) charakterisiert und in Beziehung zu benachbarten Fächern gesetzt. Einige Schwerpunkte bibliothekswissenschaftlicher Forschung werden exemplarisch behandelt. Sie unterstreichen die Notwendigkeit theoretischer und methodischer Grundlegung der Bibliothekspraxis - eine Aufgabe, die der Bibliothekswissenschaft gestellt ist und von der sich die Existenzberechtigung dieser Disziplin ableitet.
