Anders Petersen (geb. 1944) war 18 Jahre alt, als er aus Schweden nach Hamburg zu Besuch kam, eher zufällig im „Lehmitz“, einer Stehbierhalle am Ende der Reeperbahn, landete und hier Freundschaften schloss, die seinen weiteren Lebensweg prägen sollten. 1968 kam er zurück und begann zu photographieren – mit Unterbrechungen zwei Jahre lang. Seine Aufnahmen, 1978 erstmals bei uns erschienen, sind inzwischen zu Klassikern ihres Genres geworden – eine authentische Studie aus einem Milieu, das gemeinhin als asozial bezeichnet wird und so heute nicht mehr existiert.

Zoo is a wild ride through Anders Petersen’s oeuvre, a racy edit of his work that has animals as its central theme. Whether they be conscious portraits of animals or a haphazard photographic encounter with a woman’s legs in python-print tights, Petersen draws out the animal and animalistic in all that he sees. At a typical zoo we are the spectators, peering in on creatures as they go about their existence, mostly oblivious to our presence. Yet in Zoo we find ourselves both behind and before the bars of the cage—with Petersen as the delighted zookeeper.

Bekannt wurde Anders Petersen in den 60ziger Jahren mit seiner fotografischen Dokumentation des „Café Lehmitz“ – einer Bierhalle auf der Reeperbahn im Hamburg. Sein unbestechlicher Blick, unkonventionelle Kompositionen und ein radikaler, unverstellter, aber nicht voyeuristischer Blick auf die Menschen haben ihn berühmt gemacht. Der Fotograf beschäftigt sich seit Mitte der 1980er mit Rom und ist seither mehrfach dorthin zurückgekehrt. Die Auswahl der in diesem Bildband gezeigten Fotos reicht bis in die heutige Zeit und spiegelt so auch die Entwicklung der Stadt wieder. Mit seiner einzigartig persönlichen Herangehensweise fängt Petersen die Seele Roms und ihrer Bewohner ein.
