Der Tagungsband enthält Beiträge zu einem Workshop des österreichischen Verbandes für Angewandte Linguistik (Verb al ), in dem linguistische, semiotische und interdisziplinäre Aspekte von Mediendiskursen diskutiert wurden. Das breite Bedeutungsspektrum des Medienbegriffs spiegelt sich in den vielfältigen Themen und Ansätzen der Beiträge wider. Neben grundsätzlichen Fragen zu Kommunikationsmodellen werden sowohl traditionelle Mediendiskurse wie Presse- und Werbetexte sowie Comics als auch Neue Medien (Stichwort: Hypertext) behandelt.

Dieser Tagungsband enthält Beiträge eines Workshops zum Thema «Sprache und Politik», der vom österreichischen Verband für Angewandte Linguistik (VERBAL) im Oktober 1995 in Klagenfurt durchgeführt wurde. Thematische Schwerpunkte sind das «österreichische Deutsch» als nationale Varietät des Deutschen, der Diskurs über Minderheiten und die österreichische NS-Vergangenheit, Österreichs EU-Beitritt und Fragen der politischen Rhetorik.
