The terrain known today as the „Topography of Terror“ was the central site for the planning and management of most of the Nazi regime's crimes. Here, on Prinz-Albrecht-Straße (now Niederkirchnerstraße) and Wilhelmstraße, were the headquarters between 1933 and 1945 of the most important institutions of the Nazi terror apparatus, the Secret State Police Office, the Reich SS Leadership, and the Reich Security Main Office. It was here that Heinrich Himmler, Reinhard Heydrich, and other key figures of the SS state had their desks. The „Topography of Terror“ documentation traces the main features of the history of this „site of the perpetrators“, the headquarters of Nazi terror once located here, and the crimes initiated here and committed in Germany and in the European countries occupied by the Third Reich.

The photos of the deportation of the local Jews from Lörrach and its environs on October 22, 1940 preserved in the Lörrach Municipal Archive are devastating documents. They were taken during the deportation of more than 6,500 Jews in Southwest Germany in the autumn of 1940. The pictures that capture the auctions of property from the victims’ homes are especially significant. The photos published here, taken by a policeman, show the perpetrators and the organization of their crimes. They demonstrate that these acts were committed largely in public, before the eyes of hundreds of bystanders. They document the crowds who thronged the auctions of the household goods of deported Jews in Lörrach, evidence of the monstrous indifference of many Germans to the fate of the German Jews.

Der endgültige Zerfall der NS-Diktatur vollzog sich in Etappen und an verschiedenen Schauplätzen. Als illustrierte Chronik wird jene letzte Phase des „Untergangs“ des „Dritten Reiches“ skizziert, die auf den Suizid Adolf Hitlers in Berlin am 30. April 1945 noch folgte, und für die vor allem die Kleinstadt Flensburg und die dortige Marinekriegsschule Mürwik, im äußersten Norden Deutschlands, die historische Kulisse abgaben.

Am 30. Januar 1933 wurde Adolf Hitler von Reichspräsident Paul von Hindenburg zum Reichskanzler ernannt. Die aus Anlass des 80. Jahrestages der „Machtergreifung“ erarbeitete, im vorliegenden Katalog dokumentierte Ausstellung „Berlin 1933 - Der Weg in die Diktatur“ versteht sich als knappe historische Skizze. Sie ruft schlaglichtartig in Bild- und Textdokumenten die wichtigsten Zäsuren und Wegmarken der NS-Machtdurchsetzung 1933 auf. Sie beschränkt sich dabei auf den historischen Schauplatz der Hauptstadt Berlin und rückt, anhand exemplarischer Biographien, auch das Schicksal früher Berliner Opfer des NS-Terrors in den Blick.
