Diese Arbeit nimmt mit neuen theoretischen Mitteln ein traditionsreiches Thema wieder auf: die Entstehung des Staates und der ersten Klassengesellschaften. Neu ist die Perspektive: die Entstehung staatlich organisierter Gesellschaften wird als soziale Evolution begriffen. Die zentrale These lautet, daß die in den Mythen vollzogene Moralisierung des Rechts die staatliche Organisation der Gesellschaft ermöglicht. Sie wird anhand eines reichen ethnographischen Materials entfaltet: die evolutionäre Durchsetzung dieser epochemachenden Innovation wird mit dem Krisenmechanismus neolithischer Produktionsweisen und der begrenzten Steuerungskapazität rituell gebundener Entscheidungsprozesse erklärt.

Klaus Eder verknüpft in seiner Arbeit »Geschichte als Lernprozeß?« die Theorie soziokultureller Evolution mit einer Theorie moralischen Lernens. Damit sollen Konstruktionsprobleme einer Theorie der soziokulturellen Evolution gelöst werden, die sich dann ergeben, wenn man von evolutionären Lernprozessen in einem nicht nur metaphorischen Sinne reden will.
