Der Autor begann dieses Abenteuer mit einem Schritt vor die Tür seines Hauses an der spanischen Mittelmeerküste in der Nähe von Valencia. Fast schon in Vergessenheit geratene Pilgerwege führten ihn quer durch das Land über Alcaniz und Zaragoza bis nach Logroño. Ab hier folgte er dem uralten, berühmten Pilgerweg nach Santiago de Compostela, den man den „Französischen Weg“ nennt. Am Ende legte er mehr als 1080 Kilometer zu Fuß zurück. Als Heide aus dem Osten Deutschlands kommend, stellte er sich die Frage, was diesen Weg für viele so besonders macht. Die Erzählung ist keine bloße Wegbeschreibung der 58 Tage langen Wanderschaft. Sie versucht eine Verbindung herzustellen zwischen den täglichen Erfahrungen des Weges und den autobiographischen Erlebnissen des Autors und eine Brücke zu bauen für Toleranz und menschliches Miteinander.
