Anhand von Texten der deutschen philosophischen Tradition von der Romantik an (Herder, Hegel, Schelling, Nietzsche, Freud) werden die Batailleschen Kategorien (vor allem posthum veröffentlichter Texte) in ihrer Schärfe und ihrem philosophischen Anspruch nach bestimmt. Im Mittelpunkt der Untersuchung steht Batailles Auseinandersetzung mit Hegel. Auf der Grundlage präziser Textanalysen wird Batailles antisystematisches Vorgehen als ein in der Durchquerung der «Phänomenologie des Geistes» bestehendes stufenweises Abtragen des Hegelschen Systems ausgewiesen. Unter Anwendung textanalytischer Methoden wird die, die Phänomenologie Batailles ablösende Phantasmatologie in ihrer Differenz zum herkömmlichen philosophischen Diskurs erörtert.
