Giinter S. Heiduk* and Kar-yiu Wong** * Institute of International and Regional Economic Relations, University of Du- burg-Essen, Campus Duisburg, Germany ** Department of Economics, University of Washington, Seattle, USA The rapid growth of world trade has become one of the most phenomenal features of the international order after the World War. While different countries were - periencing various growth rates of their economies, most of them found out that foreign trade grew much faster than their economies. As a matter of fact, for most economies, foreign trade has been determined to be one of the biggest and the most consistent contributors to economic growth. Nowadays world trade is a very complicated phenomenon because it is not just an economic but also a social, political, environmental, labour, and legal matter. Economists care about world trade because economies are getting more and more open and world trade is related to the properties of open economies. Government planners care about world trade because it is related to many issues that the economies are facing: Resource allocation, income distribution, employment, p- duction, consumption, government revenue, economic growth, and economic w- fare. A right trade policy will enhance the economic welfare and growth of the economy in a more harmonious and equitable way. A wrong policy, however, could spell disaster.

    • This volume primarily features papers and discussions from the International Symposium “EUFORIKZ” held at Gerhard-Mercator-University Duisburg, Germany, from October 26-28, 2001. It addresses two main questions: what lessons can the Visegrad countries learn from exchange rate theory to devise effective monetary integration strategies with the European Union, and what specific challenges do these countries face in their exchange rate policies? The first set of papers explores the European Central Bank's policies, alternative options for monetary integration for accession countries, the criteria for optimum currency areas with a focus on the endogeneity hypothesis, inflation targeting, and the proposal for euroization. The second set analyzes the unique challenges faced by Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, and the Slovak Republic as they work towards EU accession and strive to meet the Maastricht convergence criteria. This collection provides valuable insights into the complexities of monetary policy and exchange rate strategies relevant to these nations' integration into the European Union.

    • Advanced industrial nations are grappling with significant political and economic challenges driven by rapid technological change. This volume features economists and political scientists discussing the current state of technological capability in the United States, Japan, and Western Germany, both historically and as a foundation for future development. The contributors analyze competition and cooperation among high-tech firms and the need for a more harmonious trade regime. The essays provide an international perspective on the theoretical frameworks surrounding policy issues influenced by increasing global competition and the evolving international trade landscape. Key discussions highlight the decline of American technological dominance, rising competition, and growing international collaboration among high-tech firms. Topics include the internationalization of basic research, the narrowing gap between basic and applied research, the impact of nation-specific interfirm relations and labor market characteristics on technological advancement, and the effectiveness of government research and development assistance. Three essays overview the technological capabilities and major policy challenges faced by the U.S., Japan, and Western Germany, while others delve into theoretical and policy issues from political science and economics perspectives, addressing specific policy challenges and related topics.
