The late Byzantine age, from the conquest of Constantinople by the Crusaders in 1204 to the fall of the last independent Greek territories to the Ottomans in 1461, was not only a period of political decline, but also of intensive cultural activity. The essays assembled in this volume discuss the works and lives of various authors (Nikephoros and Theodoros Xanthopoulos, Theodoros Metochites, Nikephoros Gregoras and Manuel Philes), they investigate issues such as ancient Greek and contemporary Western influences on the literary production, and discuss themes of material culture and, with a clear focus on Constantinople, of social, administrative and economical history.

A presentation of the ancient statues once set up in Byzantine Constantinople, with a special focus on their popular reception. This Element examines how they came to the city, where they were set up and when they were lost, and analyses their allegorical and magical interpretation by the people.

In diesem Band zeichnet der Münchner Byzantinist Albrecht Berger die Geschichte der Stadt Konstantinopel, des heutigen Istanbul, von ihrer Gründung unter dem Namen «Byzantion» (ca. 660 vor Chr.) bis zum Verfall der spätantiken Metropole im frühen 7. Jahrhundert nach. In einer Art Reiseführer werden die wichtigsten baulichen Zeugnisse der christlichen Zeit der Stadt vorgestellt, und in den abschließenden historischen Quelltexten kommen Menschen der Stadt selbst zu Wort.
