This volume combines a number of articles that intend to illustrate the manifold aspects that effect today's families in Turkey and have led to dramatic changes in socio-political relations and world views. Based on extensive anthropological and sociological research the contributors to this volume present indepth analyses of the social and cognitive transformation processes that have taken place within the last decades among rural and urban families in Turkey as well as among migrant workers' families in Western European countries. Changes in family structures, household compositions, gender and kin relations as well as alterations in the world view are a major focus of this book. Furthermore, the validity of various assumptions and paradigms referring to changes in family and household structures, gender and kin relations etc. is critically reviewed.

Despite its geostrategic importance and its easier accessibility since the dissolvent of the Soviet Union, Central Asia has nevertheless remained a white spot on the map of western scholarship and public awareness. Bringing together papers presented at the VII ESCAS-Conference, this volume aims to shed light on the historical, political, cultural and socio-economic development of this region. Scholars from within and outside Central Asia discuss a wide range of topics, covering historical processes and events on the one hand and present developments of regional and global concern on the other.
