This book gives an excellent survey of recent work on classical groups, simplifying and unifying the results of many authors. No attempt is made to cover all of the voluminous literature on classical groups; the author deals with only that portion of the subject which can be handled by the methods of linear algebra. By thus restricting his scope, he is able to include proofs of most of the results described, thereby making the book more self-contained than most Ergebnisse tracts. In the reviewer's opinion, this is an important and well-written book which should help to stimulate research on the classical groups. The book not only gives a thorough exposition of the present state of the subject, but is also an excellent introduction to the modern techniques basic to further work in this field. 

This book is a well-informed and detailed analysis of the problems and development of algebraic topology, from Poincaré and Brouwer to Serre, Adams, and Thom. The author has examined each significant paper along this route and describes the steps and strategy of its proofs and its relation to other work. Previously, the history of the many technical developments of 20th-century mathematics had seemed to present insuperable obstacles to scholarship. Das vorliegende Bueh entstand aus Vorlesungen, die fUr Studenten mit ab­ gesehlossenem Grundstudium oder auBergewohnlieh fortgesehrittene Studenten 1 niederer Studienjahre ) bestimmt waren. Diese Vorlesungen, die ieh in den Jahren 1956-57 an der Northwestern University gehalten habe, verfolgten einen doppelten Zweek: Sie soUten die notwendigen elementaren Hilfsmittel fiir ein Studium aller Zweige der modernen Mathematik bereitstelIen, in denen die "Ana­ lysis" eine Rolle spielt (d. h. praktiseh aller Zweige, eventueU mit Ausnahme der mathematisehen Logik und der reinen Algebra), und sie soUten den Studenten mit dem Gebraueh des grundlegenden mathematisehen Werkzeugs unserer Zeit - der axiomatischen Methode - vertraut machen (mit der er wiihrend seiner Grundausbildung katllI, wenn iiberhaupt, in Beriihrung gekommen sein diidte). Es wird dem Leser sehr bald auffalIen, daB ich iiberall den begrifllichen Aspekt betont habe, wiihrend der rechnerische Aspekt, der das Hauptanliegen der klassi­ schen Analysis war (vgl. [27]), zuriicktritt. Das gilt nicht nur fiir den Text, sondern aueh fUr die meisten Aufgaben. Es wurden verhiiltnismiiBig viele Aufgaben ein­ gearbeitet, urn den Text zu ergiinzen und auf interessante Weiterentwicklungen hinzuweisen. Gleiehzeitig geben die Aufgaben dem Studenten eine Gelegenheit zu priifen, inwieweit er den dargebotenen Stoff verstanden hat.
