It is a great pleasure to write the foreword to this important volume for several reasons. First: As far as we know, already primitive societies had to cope with environmental toxins of many kinds and set up regulations to limit their effects on food and drug use. Modem science, synthesizing tens of millions of new compounds has incredibly magnified this challenge. Today, xenobiotic metabolism has become a crucial task for humans and many other species alike. Second: When reading this book, one is impressed by the extraordinary speed at which neurotoxicology has advanced. Obviously, processing (and endogenous formation) oftox ins has become an extremely relevant topic. When I had the chance, almost three decades ago, to work in chemical pharmacology with Bernard B. Brodie at NIH, the drug metabo lizing system of the liver had just been recognized and characterized. We had just started to work on the biogenic amines, newly discovered cyclic nucleotides in rat brain, human cere brospinal fluid, and on the effects of toxic drugs like amphetamines. Today, biochemical neuropharmacology is a mature field of neuroscience.

Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) lernte den Violinisten Joseph Joachim (1831-1907) im Jahr 1853 über das Ehepaar Robert und Clara Schumann kennen. Zwischen beiden entwickelte sich ein Briefwechsel über musikalische Fragen, aber auch Persönliches, der 44 Jahre bis zu Brahms' Tod anhielt. Der vorliegende erste Band umfasst den Briefwechsel zwischen 1853 und 1863. Nachdruck der 1908 in Berlin erschienenen Erstausgabe.

Zwei zweite Sekundarklassen aus Nänikon-Greifensee im Kanton Zürich sehen sich unverhofft in die Lage versetzt, Gedichte zu veröffentlichen. Frühling soll das Thema sein, die Jahreszeit am Ende der Kälte. Warum soll der geschützte Rahmen der Schule gesprengt, warum das Licht der Öffentlichkeit gesucht werden? Es entstehen achtundzwanzig sehr individuell gestaltete Texte. Sowohl der Ausgangspunkt als auch der Endzustand der Arbeiten sind im kleinen Büchlein abgedruckt. Es bietet der Leserin und dem Leser vergnügliche Augenblicke, aber auch besinnliche und nachdenkliche Einsichten in das Werden und Schaffen jugendlicher Künstler.

Mehrere Hundert Gedichte hat Andreas Moser in dreißig Jahren verfasst. Eine Auswahl von sechzig wird hier publiziert. Wiederum liegt ein schmales Buch vor, voll konzentrierter Sprache, wiederum Lyrik in Reimen. Nur sind „Und weniger nette“ nicht mehr so artig wie sein Erstlingswerk „Personette“.

This study traces the utopian constructions as well as historical and philosophical implications in the dramas of Heiner Müller. In all his creative periods the inspection of a utopia of one form or another as the unattainable goal of human action played for Müller a significant role. It is therefore not surprising that almost all of his plays are charged with utopian potential that, when uncovered, allows insights into contemporary historical contexts and into Müller's dealing with the history of literature. However, his understanding of what can be called “utopia" and what function it can have in society did change over the course of his 40-year work in the “quarry” of history. The study provides a cross-section through Müller's entire dramatic oeuvre and examines each period's key plays, starting with „Lohndrücker “ from East Germany's post-war reconstruction years, up to the reflections on the end of communism in „Germania 3“.

Jeder hat Vorstellungen von Russland und den Russen, doch woher stammen diese? Die Komplexität dieser Fragen ist eng mit den historischen Umwälzungen Russlands verbunden, einschließlich dem Ende der Sowjetunion, der sozialistischen Ära und der langen Zeit des Zarismus, sowie der tatarischen Besetzung. Die Untersuchung beleuchtet, wie die Schweizer Wahrnehmung der Russen vor der kommunistischen Ära war. Anhand von Schweizer Zeitungen zwischen 1900 und 1917 wird systematisch dargelegt, was damals als russisch galt und welche Besonderheiten die Schweizer Sichtweise prägten. Während direkte Interessenkonflikte mit Russland in der Schweiz ausblieben, bieten sich hier einzigartige, neutrale Bedingungen für eine Analyse der Entstehung eines Feindbildes von Sowjetrussland. Die Untersuchung des Bildes, das die Schweiz von Russland hat, umfasst nicht nur die Inhalte, sondern auch die Gründe für deren Verzerrung. Methodisch wird der Begriff des wahrnehmenden Bewusstseins und dessen Kontext betrachtet, um die Prozesse zu verstehen, die von der Wahrnehmung eines Objekts zu dessen Darstellung führen. Letztlich ermöglicht das Schweizer Russenbild Rückschlüsse auf das schweizerische Nationalbewusstsein und dessen Bedingungen.
