Recent events have reignited discussions about religion in both public and social spheres, influencing debates on its relationship with education. This book emerges from the REDCo project, which examines "Religion in Education: A contribution to Dialogue or a factor of Conflict in transforming societies of European countries." Funded by the European Commission, this project (2006-2009) is the first major research initiative on religion and education, encompassing ten studies from eight European countries along with collaborative thematic studies. The volume presents the first thematic study, evaluating current issues in religious education across Europe.
Part one discusses European institutions, including the EU and the Council of Europe, providing insights relevant to all member states. Part two offers historical and contextual analyses of religion and education in the eight participating countries, exploring the socio-political background and current context, including multiculturalism, globalization, and pedagogical trends. Contributions address evolving aims in religious education, legal frameworks, and policies that tackle dialogue and conflict in educational settings. These analyses lay the groundwork for the project's forthcoming empirical and theoretical endeavors. The final chapter reflects on key issues raised throughout the book.
