Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky

    • It is probable that Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-flat Minor has been performed and recorded more than any other piano concerto in the course of the twentieth century. This work received its first public performance by the distinguished pianist Hans von Bülow in Boston in 1875. In 1891, with Tchaikovsky conducting and Adèle aus der Ohe as soloist, it was the first concerto ever heard in Carnegie Hall. This immensely popular work is among the first of Tchaikovsky's important compositions, and it consummately reveals not only the great warmth and vitality of the composer's inspiration, but also what the noted music scholar Abraham Veinus in his book The Concerto called "Tchaikovsky's profound understanding of the rarest of artistic mysteries: the secret of direct communication." The full score of this staple of the repertoire is reprinted here from an authoritative early edition. Musicians and music lovers will prize this handsome and inexpensive edition of one of the most beloved of all concertos.

    • Pyotr Tchaikovsky is one of the Romantic period's greatest composers and the first Russian composer to achieve international fame and admiration. Written during the years that he worked as a professor of music theory at the Moscow Conservatory from 1865 until 1878, "Guide to the Practical Study of Harmony" is Tchaikovsky's illuminating and instructive work on the fundamentals of musical composition. The guide was not widely distributed after it was published and remains rare as one of the few instructional works written by a famous and gifted composer. Tchaikovsky was composing some of his most important and creative works during his tenure as a professor, such as his early operas, including "Voyavoda" and "Swan Lake", as well "Variations on a Rococo Theme", and his Third and Fourth Symphonies. "Guide to the Practical Study of Harmony" is not only a fascinating glimpse into the mind and creative process of one of history's greatest composers, but it endures as a useful and helpful guide full of examples and exercises for all teachers and advanced students of music to use in understanding the role that harmony plays in compositions. This edition is printed on premium acid-free paper and follows the translation of Emil Krall and James Liebling.

With flash, the lake was based in a shimmering light, and before him stood the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. “I am the Swan Queen,” she said. “I am the swan that you tried to kill.” A prince's love for a swan queen breaks an evil spell in this fairy tale adaptation of the beloved ballet written by Tchaikovsky Swan Lake is perhaps the best-loved ballet of all time. Hans Christian Andersen Medal-winner Lisbeth Zwerger brings her singular vision to a glorious picture-book adaptation of the haunting story of an enchanted swan princess. She has based her version on Tchaikovsky’s original 1877 ballet, which had a happy ending, unlike the later, better-known, 1893 version. Her illustrations, luminous, lyrical, filled with grace and beauty, evoke the brilliance of the ballet and the universal appeal of this beloved fairy tale.

This unique documentary biography is the first to draw on the composer's own private documents -- over 5,000 letters, his diaries, and articles -- to present the most complete and compelling picture ever of his turbulent life and work. Linking the documents with concise, explanatory comments, Orlova charts chronologically the events of his life and sheds new light on all aspects of his personality, including his methods of working and his views on such subjects as philosophy, religion, literature, and music. Of particular interest is the clear evidence Orlova presents for the theory that Tchaikovsky did not die of cholera in 1893, but committed suicide to preserve his honor and cover up a personal scandal. Suppressed in the Russian edition of the book, the suicide theory has since been corroborated by another source and receives its fullest exposition to date in this English-language edition
