Román italského spisovatele, poctěný cenou Strega, je koncipován jako pamětní spis sepsaný selským filosofem a rebelantem ze zapadlé vsi nedaleko Urbina a líčí jakýsi donkichotský zápas tohoto člověka o lepší svět. Tento člověk si na základě neurovnané četby a vlastního pozorování vytvořil utopistickou filosofickou koncepci všenápravy světa a při jejím uskutečňování dostává se na každém kroku do konfliktu s realitou světa a nakonec podléhá. Román bohatý myšlenkami i dějem, který vydává sugestivní svědectví o současném světě.
Albino Saluggia gehörte zu jenen Arbeitern, die auf Grund ihrer langen Kriegsgefangenschaft bevorzugt in den industriellen Arbeitsprozeß eingegliedert wurden. Obwohl ihn diffuse Angst vor allen Organisationen und Institutionen quält, sieht er doch in seiner Anstellung bei einem riesigen Industriewerk die Chance einer besseren Zukunft. Er verehrt die Fabrik in fast religiöser Weise, er ist einer der zuverlässigsten Arbeiter, er hält sich dem Klatsch ebenso fern wie politischen Umtrieben. Er will die Krankheitssymptome, die sich nach und nach bei ihm einstellen, nicht wahrhaben, auch dann nicht, als der Werksarzt eine schwere Lungentuberkulose feststellt. Saluggia will nicht krank sein. Entfernung von seiner Arbeit scheint ihm die Vernichtung seiner Existenz. In den Bemühungen der Ärzte und der Sozialfürsorge sieht er nur Symptome einer Verschwörung. Er flüchtet zu Scharlatanen, um sich von ihnen seine Gesundheit attestieren zu lassen. Mit einer von Mißtrauen geschärften Beobachtungsgabe registriert er seine Umgebung: die Arbeiter am Fließband mit ihren immer müder werdenden Gesten, die Selbstsicherheit der Facharbeiter, die Spione der Werksleitung, die Phrasenhaftigkeit politischer Agitatoren, die Cliquenwirtschaft, die Sucht nach Geld und Sexus, diese ganze städtische Welt der Großindustrie, in der alles, auch die Krankenpflege, verbürokratisiert und zur Maschinerie geworden ist. Der Narr Albino Saluggia weiß nicht, wie sehr er im Unrecht ist und doch die Wahrheit sagt. Mit der Gestalt dieses Geisteskranken hat Paolo Volponi für die Entfremdung des Menschen in der »späten Industriegesellschaft« eine verbindliche poetische Definition gefunden.

«Il sipario ducale» è stato, nel '75, l'avvio di una nuova fase nella narrativa di Volponi. Lo scrittore abbandonava la forma anche esteriormente piu diretta della prima persona, non per dimettere, ma anzi per offrirsi una maggior libertà di intervento e di giudizio. Tutto ciò sembrava richiesto da una materia incandescente, anche temporalmente concentrata (la storia dura nella misura classica di pochi giorni) in una data: quella cruciale del 12 dicembre 1969, con lo scoppio della bomba in piazza Fontana a Milano. Tuono che echeggia, qui, nella remota Urbino, microcosmo rinascimentale velato da un sipario che tutto copre, e attutisce forse, ma sotto cui fermentano l'utopia e la ribellione. L'evento agisce su due mondi diversi: quello del giovane conte Oddino Oddi-Semproni, attorniato da un insensibile coro di zie, e quello di una coppia di anarchici, il professore Gaspare Subissoni, visionario insoddisfatto, e la sua compagna Vivés. Esso pone, come sempre, Volponi a lottare con la sua opera e con i suoi personaggi, e a provocare uno scontro del lettore con la sua pagina. Romanzo intenso d'amore e di storia, «Il sipario ducale» rimane come un'opera di profonda passione e di tensione anche stilistica, quasi incapace di contenere il flusso del racconto e del furore.
