Das Wirtschaftswissenschaftliche Seminar Ottobeuren ist eine traditionsreiche Institution für wirtschaftswissenschaftliche Forschung. In jedem Jahr trifft sich ein kleiner Kreis ausgewiesener Experten eines speziellen Forschungsgebietes zu einem Symposium in Ottobeuren. Das jeweils gewählte Thema wird von mehreren Seiten beleuchtet: Neue theoretische Ansätze werden diskutiert, neue empirische Befunde vorgestellt und wirtschaftspolitische Schlussfolgerungen erörtert. Dieser Band enthält die Referate und Korreferate des 37. Seminars zum Thema „Arbeitsverträge“. Behandelt werden Gründe und Auswirkungen arbeitsvertraglicher Regelungen individueller und kollektiver Natur. Dadurch soll ein Beitrag zum besseren Verständnis der Mikroökonomik von Arbeitsmärkten geleistet werden.

Die Schriftenreihe des Wirtschaftswissenschaftlichen Seminars Ottobeuren ist mit dem Ziel gegründet worden, Experten einer Spezialrichtung der Wirtschafts- und Sozialwissenschaften die bisherige Entwicklung in der Forschung einer Bestandsaufnahme unterziehen und neue Ansätze erörtern zu lassen.

This thematic issue explores the intricate relationships between wage structures, qualifications, and mobility within labor markets, particularly focusing on Germany. It begins with an analysis of the evolving wage and employment structures in relation to qualifications. The discussion extends to internal labor markets and their influence on wage and employment dynamics. A comparative perspective is provided through an examination of wage and skill differences contributing to employment disparities between the US and Germany. The impact of international trade on the skill structure of wages and employment in West Germany is also addressed. Further, the issue delves into how technical progress affects employment structures and wage distribution concerning qualifications. It evaluates the flexibility of labor demand from a firm’s perspective, questioning whether it leans towards substitutability or complementarity. The phenomenon of wage-induced mismatch in German labor markets is analyzed, drawing lessons from Portugal. Job mobility post-apprenticeship training in West Germany is empirically studied, alongside the roles of on-the-job training and employment dynamics. The employment situation for low-productivity workers is examined, and the effects of publicly financed training programs in East Germany are also discussed. The issue concludes with book reviews and additional commentary.

Vorgestellt werden mehrere Laborexperimente, deren Ergebnisse den Voraussagen der traditionellen Wirtschaftswissenschaft teilweise deutlich widersprechen und die daher wichtige Impulse für eine Neuformulierung der theoretischen Ansätze liefern.

This supplement to Applied Economics Quarterly reports on the 70th Annual Meeting of the Association of German Economic Research Institutes (ARGE-Institute), which took place in Berlin on April 19, 2007. The topic was „Energy Markets - Investment, Competition, and Regulation.“Energy markets pose a major challenge for the economy, politics, and society: the entire structure of power generation is on the verge of a fundamental renewal. By dealing with the important current question of how regulation will affect investments in generation and transmission capacities within liberalized electricity and gas markets, the conference offered useful contributions for policy advice to the federal government. Keynote speaker Carl Christian von Weizsäcker discussed investments in energy markets, while Jean Michel Glachant, the second keynote speaker, considered the choice between a „Vibrant European Market and Industry or a Bunch of National Energy Champions.“ The other lectures focused on alternative strategies for renewable energies, biofuels as a climate policy strategy, as well as innovation, competition, and asymmetric strategic investment. Wirtschaftswissenschaftlichen Seminars zum Thema „Dynamik internationaler Märkte“. Behandelt werden Fragen der europäischen Integration und der weltweiten Globalisierung aus theoretischer und empirischer Sicht. Dabei wird dem dynamischen Charakter der internationalen Marktprozesse besondere Bedeutung beigemessen.
