Acutissimo nell’intendere tutto ciò che gli piace, sbrigativo nell’eliminare tutto ciò che gli è estraneo, Goethe espone un’idea sulla pittura veneziana che ha ricavato dal confronto tra le opere dei pittori e il luogo dove sono nati. Vorrebbe essere un’idea generale sulla pittura veneziana, ma è stata suggerita dalla visione ancora fresca di un’opera del Veronese, La famiglia di Dario davanti ad Alessandro, allora al palazzo Pisani Moretta, adesso alla National Gallery di Londra.
