It was the menace of the German submarines that so nearly brought defeat to the British in World War II. Seventy per cent of U-Boat crewmen perished at sea. This is the story of the U-Boat wars, from 1914 to 1945, recreated from the experiences of German survivors, a tale of constant danger.

- The Type VII U-boat was the quintessential U-boat, the one that comes to mind whenever the subject of the Battle of the Atlantic in World War Two is raised. This book describes in detail the technological war fought by and against the Type VII U-boat and is illustrated with a marvellous selection of photographs and line drawings. Interviews with U-boat veterans and access to plentiful naval records have given the author the means to provide a fascinating insight into both life aboard a cramped vessel and the practical methods used both to track and destroy the enemy and to avoid his often fatal searches. As the war turned against Germany, this led to experimentation with technical systems that were often years ahead of their time. With its appendixes on paint schemes, boats built and a profile of Donitz, this is a valuable contribution to the study of the U-boat arm, which will be warmly welcomed by naval enthusiasts.

- The Douglas SBD Dauntless, the Slow But Deadly Dauntless, was easily the most famous bomber of World War II, and possibly the most important dive bomber flown by any combatant during World War II. The Dauntless was already considered obsolete even before the United States entered the war. Obsolescence not with standing, The Dauntless sunk more enemy shipping during 1942 than all other aircraft combined and destroyed the cream of the Japanese aircraft carrier fleet during the Battle of Midway, a blow from which the Japanese Navy never recovered.
- "Nevada, along with fellow survivors of the Pearl Harbor holocaust, hands back a bit of it off the Iwo Jima coast, February 1945. The camouflage scheme is an example of the relatively rare Measure 31a, which substituted Navy Blue for Dull Black as the darkest color.
